Dry Skin

Characteristics of Dry Skin

Dull-looking complexion, rough texture, flakes, itchiness, redness due to irritation, visible lines, and barely noticeable pores is characteristic of dry skin. This skin type produces very little sebum hence one experiences a feeling of tightness.

The skin barrier plays a major role in dry skin. The barrier does not retain moisture when the sebum is at a minimum level thus resulting in dry skin. Dehydration is a result of a lack of moisture in the skin. The skin barrier can also be affected by external conditions such as environmental factors e.g. sun, wind, snow, etc., or internal factors.

Other skin types such as oily or normal can also become dry as a result of using the wrong products.

How to manage dry skin

  • To manage dry skin it is important to ensure that it is properly moisturized by the use of humectants or other ingredients which aid in infusing the dry cells with moisture.
  • Using gentle exfoliating products helps to desquamate the rough dry skin resulting in smoother and fresher looking skin.
  • Warm water should be used for washing the skin as hot water dehydrates the skin further aggravating the dry skin which is highly prone to irritation.
  • Avoid using harsh soaps especially bar soaps and products that contain alcohol. These products further exacerbate the dryness.
  • ¬†Use skin actives such as acids with caution so as not to damage the skin barrier.
